Southern Electric: fuel mix, prices, contact

Southern Electric in a nutshell

southern electric info
  • Southern Electric is SSE’s trading name in the South of England.
  • Southern Electric prices are higher than average.
  • But the Southern Electric customer service reputation is good.

Southern Electric, one of the original SSE brands

Southern Electric was originally a public utilities company, the Southern Electricity Board (1948); it supplied electricity to customers in the South of England. It became Southern Electric in 1990 (the same year it was privatised) and merged with Scottish Hydro-Electric in 1998 to form Scottish and Southern Energy, rebranded to SSE in 2010. Though part of SSE, the Southern Electric brand is still used to supply electricity and gas to customers in Southern England.

SSE is the UK’s second largest electricity and gas supplier through its different trading names, supplying energy to 9.6 million customers. Alistair Phillips-Davies is the CEO of SSE, which employs 18,500 people in the UK. In 2013, SSE generated £28 billion in revenue.

As one of SSE’s trading names, Southern Electric shares SSE’s fuel mix, which is composed of coal, mostly, followed by natural gas, as the following chart shows:

Southern Electric current energy prices

In the local distribution zones where SSE trades as Southern Electric, the supplier is relatively expensive compared to some independent suppliers but compared to the big six electricity and gas suppliers Southern Electric tariffs are respectable.

To give you a more concrete idea, here are estimated annual dual-fuel bills for Southern Electric customers on average energy consumption in the UK, i.e., 3,200 kWh/year for electricity and 13,500 kWh/year for gas.

Southern Electric customer reviews

Southern Electric complaints performance

Complaints handling by Southern Electric is combined with all the other SSE trading names. Complaints performance among SSE partners is respectable insofar as the supplier receives comparatively few complaints (217,253 in the first quarter of 2014 - only Scottish Power receives fewer complaints). However, compared to its Big Six competitors SSE and its brands, including Southern Electric, are not the fastest in complaints resolution: 82.11% of complaints are resolved by the end of the next working day.

What Southern Electric customers say

Overall, customers seem content with Southern Electric services. Of the online reviews and ratings, negative customers focus on costs, reflecting Southern Electric’s above-average prices compared to other cheaper electricity and gas suppliers. Tonik (same customer service, billing, prices, etc.) is a supplier with more reviews, better prices and customer service quality.
