Why does knowing your consumption matter?
Energy suppliers quote tariffs as a unit rate (pence per kWh) plus a daily standing charge. To work out your actual annual bill you need to know how many kWh your household uses each year. Without that figure, comparing tariffs is guesswork.
Ofgem publishes typical domestic consumption values (TDCVs) as a rough guide — currently around 2,700 kWh/year for electricity and 11,500 kWh/year for gas for a medium household. But homes vary enormously depending on size, insulation, heating system, and the number of people living there. A well-insulated flat with two residents can use less than half the energy of a draughty four-bedroom house.
Once you have an accurate estimate, you can:
- Compare supplier quotes on a like-for-like basis;
- Spot whether your current tariff represents good value;
- Identify where the biggest savings from switching might come from.
How the estimate is calculated
Our tool uses average UK consumption data broken down by end use — heating, hot water, cooking, and base electrical (lighting, appliances, standby). Adjustments are applied for property type (house vs apartment), insulation quality, and whether the property is a second home. Costs are then calculated using the current Ofgem price cap unit rates and standing charges.
The estimate is indicative. For a precise figure, check your smart meter's In-Home Display or your supplier's online account for your last 12 months of actual consumption.
