Green Energy

Green Energy in a nutshell

  • Green Energy is one the UK’s smallest electricity suppliers.
  • It provides customers with 100% green or 100% renewable electricity (no gas).
  • Green Energy prices are competitive but not the cheapest.

Green Energy: a supplier that makes shareholders of its customers

Douglas Steward setup Green Energy in 2001. It stands out insofar as the supplier offers free shares to its first 100,000 customers. Green Energy only supplies electricity at this stage. The supplier serves just over 8,000 customers, giving it an 0.4% share of the independent energy suppliers’ market.

Green Energy’s fuel mix rests predominantly on natural gas

Although Green Energy’s fuel mix is not 100% renewable, it is 100% green. The supplier’s mix relies mainly on natural gas and anaerobic energy (organic waste), as shown in the graph below. Green Energy owns and operates around 150 generators to produce the energy it supplies to its customers.

Green Energy current prices

Green Energy’s prices are neither cheap nor expensive. The green supplier only offers a variable tariff with no cancellation fees (which is standard with variable price contracts). Customers only choose whether they want a discount for online account management and whether they want green (mostly natural gas) or renewable (anaerobic, hydro, solar, wind and biomass) electricity.

Unfortunately, Green Energy does not provide an average standard tariff comparison rate for the entire country. To give you a comparison reference, we have provided you with the London TCR and annual annual estimated electricity costs (3,200 kWh for electricity and 13,500 kWh for gas).

Green Energy customer reviews

Green Energy complaints performance

Between January and March 2014, Green Energy received 15 complaints, of which 40% were resolved by the end of the next working day and 100% within eight weeks. Although compared to other electricity and gas suppliers this is a relatively slow performance, the number of complaints (184 per 100,000 customers) is particularly low in the energy industry. Having said this, Green Energy has very few customers for the moment.

What customers say about Green Energy

Unfortunately, too few online reviews are available about Green Energy to establish trends in the quality of its billing, payment options, customer services, etc.
